What Is Dyspraxia?

Dyspraxia, sometimes called Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is a condition that affects a child’s ability to plan out and coordinate their movements. This can make everyday activities like tying shoes, writing, or even walking a challenge.

In addition to challenges with movement, dyspraxia can cause children to struggle with cognitive (thinking) skills, such as planning out a sequence of actions or paying attention.

Common Symptoms of Dyspraxia

There are a wide variety of symptoms of dyspraxia that can range from mild to more pronounced. Some common symptoms include:

  • Difficulty with fine motor skills like writing, self-feeding, or buttoning clothes
  • Problems with gross motor skills, such as running, jumping, or balancing
  • Clumsiness or frequent tripping and falling
  • Challenges with hand-eye coordination
  • Struggles with organization and planning
  • Low self-confidence in physical activities or social situations due to movement challenges
  • Poor or unusual posture

What Causes Dyspraxia?

The exact cause of dyspraxia is not yet known. However, it is more common in boys than in girls. There are also some risk factors that can increase a child’s risk of developing a coordination disorder like dyspraxia, including premature birth, low birth weight, and family history.
